GREAT WINES UNDER $20

Great wines don’t necessarily have to burn a hole in your wallet, as there’s much to be said, and drank, for under $20.

Great wines don’t necessarily have to burn a hole in your wallet, as there’s much to be said, and drank, for under $20. Let’s cut to the chase. Here are some cheap wines that actually taste good! (Please note that prices can be subject to change.)

New Zealand Savignon Blancs usually run upwards of $20, so The Ned Sauvignon Blanc is a steal of a deal around $16. It’s very good on its own or paired with seafood. Grab this one for a sushi evening at home.

If your tastes are on the sweeter side, give the Sonoran Ranch Golfer Series Riesling Gewurztraminer a try. This BC VQA blend is great for sipping on and comes in just under $15. The balance between the residual sugar and the acidity pair it well with spicy curries, cheeses, or a late brunch.

If red wine is on your list, give The Stump Jump Red a shot. This wine from the land down under is a lovely blend of Grenache, Syrah and Mouvèrde. Its new-world version of the same mix of grapes that originate in the Rhone region of France and, at $14, is an excellent bang for your buck. Grab a bottle for your next meat or cheese fondue night or to accompany appetizers such as cured meats and blue cheese.

BBQ season is fast approaching as winter begins its steady retreat on the Island. Malbec and BBQ is a match made in heaven. If pulled pork, steaks or slow-roasted BBQ ribs are on the menu, stock up on the Argentinian Gascon Malbec, available for a mere $13.

Pinot Noir wines tend to be priced at the higher end of the wine scale, given it’s a tricky grape to grow and requires more tending than most. So, at $20, the California Parker Station Pinot Noir, with its big bold berries and a hint of pepper spice, is a true bargain for a good pinot noir. It pairs well with salad, steaks and chicken.
